Data Journalism Fall Fellowship Now Open

Application for InfoTimes Fall fellowships 2018 in data journalism is now open till 16 September. The daily training program extends three months starting from 23 September.

The fellowship includes working with as a part of InfoTimes team, handling daily tasks to produce data-driven stories and going through the whole process of telling the story. Fellow will learn skills of searching for data, data scraping, organizing, cleaning, analysis and telling data-driven stories for target audience, using a wide variety of tools.

This fellowship is not for students, fresh grads or starter journalists. It is for journalists in the middle of their careers, with two years of experience at minimum, and are looking for widening their bunch of skills to include dealing with data in depth.

Applicants can be from Cairo, any governorate in Egypt or any country outside Egypt. This is unpaid fellowship. Only fellows from outside Egypt will receive allowance of USD150 as living expenses coverage.

During Summer, InfoTimes has given the fellowship for three aspiring journalists; Rehab Ismaiel, Ahmed Ismaiel and Wessal Hammam. All of the three worked on data-driven journalistic pieces and other data projects that InfoTimes offer to clients.

For example, Rehab wrote an in-depth piece on differences of general budgets between 2014 and 2018, while Ahmed produced a data-driven report on Zamalek football managers during the presidency of Murtada Mansour, as well as working with the team to produce two 360 infographics that successfully went viral on social media. Wessal also produced an interactive dashboard on Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018 as well as working on other pieces that are still to be published.

The three fellows described their experience at InfoTimes as “the best gateway for aspiring journalists” and “great opportunity to gain skills of dealing with data and interactive storytelling”. They also saw InfoTimes as “one of the best data agencies in the Middle East.”
