Kushari.. A Discretional Indicator to Measuring Inflation


Economists measure the change in price through what’s called an inflation index. The inflation index measures the change in price of some major consumer goods, from time to time. On the other hand, people feel this change faster. Being a part of Egyptians daily life, Kushari could be considered as an actual people’s indicator towards the economic changes in Egypt over the past few years; especially that 7.8% of the respondents eat Kushari more than 10 times a month.

InfoTimes has conducted a four-question survey on the frequency of eating Kushari per month, the average income of its consumers, the most visited Kushari restaurants and the most ordered dish size. In three days, 240 online responses came in.

Analysing the survey results showed that the respondents eat Kushari nearly 4 times a month, which means that the majority of the respondents eat it at least once a month.

Handy

Kushari is considered to be a popular dish in Egypt. Being a cheap high-calorie meal gave it “the dish of the under-resourced” title. Analysing the survey results showed an increase in the frequency Kushari is being eaten monthly among respondents with a 1000-3000 EGP monthly salaryـــ the average income per capita in Egypt, followed by a lower-income segment.

Among 10 Kushari restaurants listed in the survey, five have dominated 82% of
the respondents voices, while the rest of the restaurants combined obtained 18%.

Same price, but

The price of the dish size stated in the report is the same for every restaurant (10 EGP). However, analysing the dishes’ weights, InfoTimes has discovered that the sold amount differs from a restaurant to another. Excluding the liquid componentsـــ Sauces, Hend came in the first place with a 471-gram net-weight for the dish, while Tom and Basal ranked last with 242 grams; with a 50% weight difference.

InfoTimes Kushari


Kushari consists of a mixture of carbohydrates and legumes, but the secret of its insignificance lies in the asymmetric amount of this mixture. According to the dishes collected from restaurants and the ingredients they used, we’ve determined the ingredients of an InfoTimes specialـــ that is the arithmetic average of each and every ingredient included in the above-mentioned dishes. It’s going to be later used as an indicator to a study focusing on the prices of the ingredients and the change in its prices between 2006 and 2016.


Kushari index


Kushari can be an indicator on the change in goods’ prices; since the ingredients of Kushari are already used in many other daily dishes. Comparing the annual change in the inflation index to the annual average prices of each and every ingredient of InfoTimes’s dish, we’ve found a very critical direct relationship and another inverse relationship between the end of 2012 and the end of 2015.

The results of a survey conducted and shared on social media platforms, between the 27th and the 30th of August 2018, by InfoTimes. The sample consists of 240 respondents.

Random samples of same-price Kushari dishes, collected from five famous restaurants chosen by the respondents. The components of each dish were separated and weighed by InfoTimes.

The Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, monthly bulletins of consumer prices and the annual bulletins of food and product prices, between 2006 and 2016.
